CGMW workshop

Hey Everyone!

The good folks at CGMW asked me if I would be interested in doing a workshop for them and it was a blast! Basically it's my approach to character design from sketching to researching and rendering a digital painting of the character. It's a two hour workshop with an hour live Q&A. Sorry for the lack of posts!

Working as a visdev artist at Jim Henson studio and I just finished my first online class and it was a blast: really challenging but also really rewarding and fun. I’ll be teaching a second time around so if anyone is interested please sign up! I’ll post more details about it when we get closer.

One of the challenging things I find about our field of work is the lack of material we can show. You could work for years and never be allowed to show anyone anything, even if the project is shelved and has no chance of coming back. It’s not uncommon to have a career where 90% of your concept art never sees the light of day or goes anywhere.

So with that said, I got permission to show a pilot I worked on last summer at Nickelodeon. Even though this pilot was animated and awesome it may never see the light of day and it’s one of the painful realities of our industry. It really makes me wonder how many awesome, unseen pilots are out there, floating about in the ether.

Hey Everyone! Sorry for the late posting but I finished up work at Nickelodeon and now I'm at Technicolor Animation.So far, it has been a fun challenging job for sure! On another note I'll be teaching an online class on digital painting 101 with a ton of super pros! I'm pretty excited to teach again: I used to teach classes at Inland Empire back in the day and it was something I really enjoyed, even though my teaching style is just barfing out knowledge that I picked up from jumping from studio to studio. So it is! Here is a rough character stab at Nosferatu. What ever happened to just awesome creepy vampires. I put a few explorations of style but I really wanted a cobra influence on the over all design. Plus a random background painting for an ~~unannounced~~ shelved project.

So here is proj I was working on in rad's storyboarding class which I highly recommend (cool guy great class what els could you want?) basically my story is about a homeless guy who is actually an international jewel thief who steals purely for the thrills. I took my 2 backup hard drives (years of mediocre work, family and friends photo's) to have them recover the data off them, only to find out the owner has lost both of my hard drives. Once I find the final versions of these guys I'll post them up. Hope you enjoy the roughs!

Woo characters from a former project! and an environment!During the holidays I had a chance to rummage through some old boxes and found this little sucka. I never really kept any of my artwork when I was growing up (I never really consider art as a career option growing up) so naturally, I trashed just about everything I did. Luckily my mother saved one little piece and here it is, I was roughly the age of 6 and I can only assume this is a wizard monster with a mouth in his stomach! good times.

Coo! So this piece is for the group over at Part Time Dreamers and the subject was “Opera”. The first thing that came to my mind was the scene in Amadeus when Salieri is describing Mozart’s work. The beauty and complexity of one instrument taking over another and finally coming together to complete the song. So I wanted to show the process of an Opera.

Last Friday Marcelo Vignali was kind enough to invite me out to the Sketch Club for lunch (man those guys can freakin draw!) so here’s a few drawings from my sketch book.

Finally, todays my birthday…and I manage to pull my back really bad. I been spending the whole day just hunched over like an old man (I see the irony in this happening today) The shower is a true story, I couldn’t stand for that long so I just had to sit there…….so sad.

I really wanted to help out my gf Traci Honda and Rona Liu since they are graduating but they’ll understand! ...I hope. Congratulations you guys!

Update time! Our new cat is growing like crazy! (Jess forer) suggested "Otterpop" and we just stuck with it. He's really active kind of cat and loves to ~~attack~~ “play” with Addy , whom generally wants to be left alone, while Otterpop demands attention all the time...matter of fact -she turned out to be a He. The dr. said "he wasn't much of a boy". It was quite a shock for all of us haha

The other two images are just environments, done for James Paik class (he's so freakin fast gah!) I really need to practice sci-fi more. thanks Jackson for all the advice!

Wooo I haven't posted in a long time! Things have been really busy lately, I been doing freelance- working at Imagineering and now I'm teaching part time at an AI school. I figure it wouldn't be that bad- after all I TA so many art center classes........oh man I found a whole new respect for teachers to so many levels. Anyways- have a safe and happy holidays everyone!

So this is a quick speed painting we did at class. (15-20mins max) I think the topic was "rock creatures coming out of the ground) This is Jackie who works at the animation archives (really nice girl!) A lot of the images in the new book "Story" the archives series was scanned by her.

NEWS UPDATE!
The school I'm teaching at is going to have a workshop on the Jan 6th with Steven Silver and Bill Perkins- and it's FREE! Sadly I'm going to miss this event by 1 day (my flight comes in a day after uuug) but you guys should sign up for it! Hope this helps someone.

Well we got another kitten to play with our cat "Addy". We came up with several names such as: Battle star, Otter pop, Bicycle, chubacabra "chubby" for short, leopluradon and Isis! She doesn't seem to respond to any of these names, but perhaps soon she will have a name to be proud of!

Time for another update! Midterms are just about over I think.....at least I hope so. Here some stuff from various classes n such.

A few Alice design- I couldn't figure out if I wanted to go more cartoon network style/or french animation style. In the end I think I made a mix of the two . In my version of Alice in Wonderland , Alice is a small Gypsy child who wonders into wonderland which is run by mechanical toys.
I guess I just wanted to plug in what we had to do for this assignment: You had to draw in Frazzato styl so first you do a sketch- then you go over it with graphite dust-then you scan it in and finally sprinkle a little photoshop magic on it and then do a draw through....in one week....with 5 other classes breathing down you're neck. It was tough but I learned a lot so it was worth it.

Holy god damn Christmas I have internet again! Since we moved to a new place we pretty much haven’t had any internet for a month. All i can say is ATNT customer service is by far the worst beast we ever had to face. Pretty amazing me and my roommates didn’t go wildly insane.

I been really busy with just every day life stuff- I thought this would be fun to share: It's a bike gathering called "Critical Mass" where did we ride? hell if I know...there is no set directions. We just follow who ever is in lead apparently. It was quite something to travel around LA ,with several hundreds bikers ...not to mention taking up 2 lanes of traffic and pissed off drivers.

Rather than make a new post Here's a quick painting from Rohb's class today. wheee! an hour painting from imagination. good times.

It’s been a while since I posted anything…hah. Lately I been really busy. This is supposed to be my last term off .. but I TA two class and work a dead end job with little time for myself...So I guess being in term will be my only break haha On a brighter note I'm helping Kazu Kibuishi with Amulet which is looking amazing! http://www.boltcity.com/ you should definitely check it out when the book comes out! excitement!

As for the piece it was just a bedtime doodle with a slap of random color.
