Gallery painting and landscapes!

Hey everyone!

The kind folks at the Grand Central Art Center were kind enough to ask me to participate in an upcoming gallery show, and this is the piece I submitted.  The theme of the gallery show is "ISM" so I chose Eidolism, a belief in ghost. You can find out more info here and it should be a great show! http://ismcommunity.org/

The rest are plein air paintings were done during our lunch break. First one was done near the Burbank airport (man it was loud that day!) and the other was Eaton Canyon... enjoy!

Teaching again at CGMW online!

Hey everyone! I'm going to teach another round of digital painting if anyone is interested.
http://www.cgmwonline.com/Digital-Painting.html

There are other amazing artist to check out as well!

On to the paintings...the first painting was from a rejected game project from a few years ago (super fun to work on) and the last two are digital landscape paintings on my lunch break at work.

I'm jumping on the Tumbler bandwagon! I want to put more of my rough dirty sketches and try to keep my blog more on the side of finish paintings and more finish work. check it out!

Now to the paintings, here are some BG I did at Nickelodeon, one is a large pan bg and a kitchen for an evil giant. Gah, the pan was a nightmare ...nearly 95% through it was altered and change but at least for the better!

So I hope to post more of these in the future, these are my lunch time paintings. These are about 30min each, done on a tablet pc (samsung slate 7) which is a great piece of hardware! I'm trying to paint these not only under a time limit, but also avoiding the temptation to tweak these at home. The end goal isn't to make a pretty painting, but to use these more for studying color lighting etc. which you can only really get from observing nature, and all the subtle color shifts and value. gota keep practicing!

Happy New Years!

CGMW workshop

Hey Everyone!

The good folks at CGMW asked me if I would be interested in doing a workshop for them and it was a blast! Basically it's my approach to character design from sketching to researching and rendering a digital painting of the character. It's a two hour workshop with an hour live Q&A. I highly recommend checking out their website and seeing what other workshops they have to offer! Just click HERE CGMW Online

Here is the finished painting for the workshop along with some rough sketches. Hope you guys enjoy it!

(a painting not related to the workshop) I felt like painting something different from my usual graphic style - what could be more fun than a mech? Hope you enjoy it!

I'm not dead yet!

Sorry for the lack of posts!

Working as a visdev artist at Jim Henson studio and I just finished my first online class and it was a blast: really challenging but also really rewarding and fun.  I’ll be teaching a second time around so if anyone is interested please sign up! I’ll post more details about it when we get closer.

One of the challenging things I find about our field of work is the lack of material we can show. You could work for years and never be allowed to show anyone anything, even if the project is shelved and has no chance of  coming back. It’s not uncommon to have a career where 90% of your concept art never sees the light of day or goes anywhere.

So with that said, I got permission to show a pilot I worked on last summer at Nickelodeon. Even though this pilot was animated and awesome it may never see the light of day and it’s one of the painful realities of our industry.  It really makes me wonder how many awesome, unseen pilots are out  there, floating about in the ether.

and a random croc archer!

Holiday painting and more!

Hey Everyone! Sorry for the late posting but I finished up work at Nickelodeon and now I'm at Technicolor Animation. So far, it has been a fun challenging job for sure! On another note I'll be teaching an online class on digital painting 101 with a ton of super pros! I'm pretty excited to teach again: I used to teach classes at Inland Empire back in the day and it was something I really enjoyed, even though my teaching style is just barfing out knowledge that I picked up from jumping from studio to studio. At any rate, here's a link to the new school and classes!
http://cghub.com/masterclasses/
I also teamed up with a group of old class mates from Art Center selling monthly themed prints.  The image below is from our Winter theme.  Here is a link to our store to see more work from the various artists. http://www.etsy.com/shop/pressprint?ref=pr_shop_more

Here is a demo I did at Art Institute in Inland Empire when I subbed a class for Derek Kosol. Aging monster robots YAY!

Tofu Girls BG!

Here are some tofu girls backgrounds. (Traci Honda designed the characters and Mike Moloney/ Griffith Kimmins) tackled the animation. We had to edit the backgrounds down but here they are in their original state. There should be a video on the www.tofugirls.com website soon but there will also be a video at comic con- check it out it! Comic-Con Preview (Booth 2445)

Time for a post!

So it is! Here is a rough character stab at Nosferatu. What ever happened to just awesome creepy vampires. I put a few explorations of style but I really wanted a cobra influence on the over all design.  Plus a random background painting for an unannounced shelved project.
